Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Back and Spine Pain

Why Non-Surgical Care Comes First
Most back and spine pain is treated without surgery. Florida Orthopedic & Spine Institute in Naples, Florida offers image-guided injections, radiofrequency ablation, and interventional pain management — all performed by a board-certified interventional pain physician before surgery is ever considered. The approach is straightforward: the least-invasive treatment that addresses the problem is always the starting point. Surgery is considered only when conservative care has been exhausted or when imaging shows a condition that cannot be resolved any other way.
Non-Surgical Options We Offer
Facet joint injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to inflamed spinal joints under image guidance. Medial branch blocks target the small nerve branches carrying pain signals from facet joints. They provide temporary relief and help confirm the pain source. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat to interrupt nerve signals responsible for chronic facet pain, with relief typically lasting six months to two years. Epidural steroid injections reduce inflammation around compressed nerve roots and are commonly used for herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and radiating arm or leg pain.

When Surgery Becomes the Right Option
If non-surgical treatment has not provided adequate relief, or if imaging shows a structural problem such as a severely herniated disc or significant spinal stenosis, a surgical consultation with our fellowship-trained spine surgeon is the next step. At Florida Orthopedic & Spine Institute, the same practice that manages your non-surgical care also performs surgery if it becomes necessary. You do not start over with a new provider.
